SoftBank Corp. ("SoftBank"), ZutaCore®? and Hon Hai Technology Group ("Foxconn®?") announced they implemented ZutaCore's two-phase DLC (Direct Liquid Cooling) technology in an AI server using NVIDIA accelerated computing, making it the world's first implementation of Zuta Core's two-phase DLC (Direct Liquid Cooling) technology using NVIDIA H200 GPUs. In addition, SoftBank designed and developed a rack-integrated solution that integrates each component of the server, including cooling equipment with two-phase DLC technology, on a rack scale, and conducted an operational demonstration and performance evaluation at its data center in February 2025. The demonstration results indicated the solution passed NVIDIA's temperature test (NVQual), thereby confirming the compatibility, stability and reliability of this rack-integrated solution. The solution also achieved pPUE (partial Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.03 (actual measured value) per rack for cooling efficiency. The closer the number is to 1.0, the more energy efficient it is. Features of rack-integrated solution optimized with two-phase DLC technology: By integrating server components such as cooling equipment equipped with 2-phase DLC technology, which conventionally had to be optimized individually, on a rack scale, it is possible to provide a "Plug & Play" solution that can be used immediately by simply connecting the equipment. This makes it easy and simple to install in AI data centers. ZutaCore's two- phase DLC technology, which cools the chipsets (CPUs, GPUs, memory, etc.) that are the heat sources in the server by bringing them into contact with a cold plate, circulates a special insulating heat transfer (dielectric) fluid with a low boiling point in the cold plate and uses heat absorption during the phase change from liquid to gas caused by the heat source. Efficient cooling is achieved through repeated evaporation and condensation. In addition, the water temperature can be maintained at a higher temperature than in conventional water-cooled facilities, which improves the heat transport capacity of the water used for cooling and reduces the flow rate of water to achieve the required cooling effect.

Aizip, Inc. in partnership with SoftBank Corp. announced the release of customized Small Language Model (SLM) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions for enterprise applications. The system operates locally on mobile devices or on-premises servers, addressing the pressing concerns of enterprise data safety. Fine-tuned with domain specific data, these SLMs can address unique enterprise tasks with comparable accuracy to 100x larger cloud LLMs. This announcement comes as many companies have implemented bans on cloud-based LLMs for business-related tasks, iting concerns about leaks of private information. A recent survey from Menlo Ventures found that 21% of failed AI pilots were due to data-privacy hurdles. Fine-tuned SLMs are an alternative to general LLMs, offering security and privacy of information along with the benefits of AI-enabled work. Many enterprises have explored using open-source Small Language Models that run locally and efficiently on-premises as replacements for cloud-based LLMs. However, these models have generally turned out to be too reliable to meet production-level performance requirements. Aizip and SoftBank address this challenge with innovative new solutions. The joint team developed and delivered a customized SLM integrated into a RAG system, running locally as a mobile application. When applied to SoftBank's internal documents the application offers employees a Q&A platform that generates accurate, up-to-date response, running entirely on an iPhone 14. Testing shows that the system satisfactorily addresses 97% of employee questions, and response quality measured on a dataset of 22,000 questions matched responses generated by a GPT-4o-based RAG system. The key to this unique reliability is Aizip's SLM-customization pipeline, which includes high-quality data generation, fine-tuning, and multifaceted evaluation. Although the first product was developed for the iPhone, Aizip's flexible SLM-deployment tools allow SLMs and RAG systems to run on a variety of edge platforms, including on-premises servers, PCs, and even IoT devices like microprocessors (MPUs), as announced in June 2024. SoftBank Corp. announced it launched full-fledged initiatives to develop “AITRAS,” a convergence solution based on the AI-RAN concept that can host both AI and RAN (Radio Access Network) workloads on the same NVIDIA-accelerated computing platform. SoftBank will not only implement AITRAS – a carrier-grade convergence solution with high capacity, high performance and high quality – across its own commercial network, it also aims to expand the solution to telecom operators globally from 2026 and beyond. AITRAS is the productization of AI-RAN, an architecture that is aimed at achieving high performance and efficiency in AI and RAN while leveraging the features of NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated computing platform. The solution not only provides a carrier-grade RAN with high capacity, high performance and high quality on an NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip platform — it also enables concurrent and efficient operations with a variety of AI applications, including generative AI. In real-world wireless environments, various high-speed processing and algorithmic functions are applied to maximize performance while dealing with daily occurrences such as sudden traffic surges and multipath radio interference. However, as these processes become increasingly advanced and complex, maintaining system stability becomes a challenge. AITRAS’s L1 software, which is SoftBank’s newly developed L1 software that is based on the NVIDIA AI Aerial platform, provides the high stability and high performance essential for a carrier-grade RAN through parallel processing of the signal and optimization of task initiation timing, while also contributing to the maximization of the RAN capacity and reduction in power consumption. SoftBank also developed an orchestrator that coordinates with the virtualization platform, which is expected to improve cost-effectiveness through operational efficiency and reduced power consumption by efficiently and dynamically allocating computing resources based on the unique application characteristics of AI and RAN. By implementing AITRAS, telecom operators can build an AI infrastructure while maintaining investments in its traditional RAN infrastructure. Additionally, by leveraging AI for network optimization, they can achieve efficient and innovative infrastructure investments. AITRAS is implemented with NVIDIA AI Enterprise, a software platform that includes a set of functions that enables the easy development and deployment of large language models (LLMs). With this implementation, enterprise customers can also develop and deploy their own AI applications. SoftBank is aiming to offer and deploy an AITRAS reference kit (“Reference Kit”) to telecom operators from 2025 and beyond, for the purpose of demonstrating the practicality and effectiveness of its convergence solution AITRAS, which brings the AI-RAN concept to life by enabling AI and RAN to operate on the same network infrastructure. By implementing the Reference Kit into their indoor and outdoor labs, telecom operators will be able to independently verify the functionality, performance and cost-effectiveness of AI-RAN running on an NVIDIA-accelerated computing platform. Telecom operators can also create new use cases by developing their own AI applications, deploying them and conducting verification on the Reference Kit. With this Reference Kit, high-capacity, high-performance and high-quality carrier-grade RAN and various AI applications such as generative AI can run concurrently on an NVIDIA AI computing infrastructure. Additionally, the Reference Kit provides an orchestrator, enabling efficient computing resource operations. This Reference Kit is a system primarily composed of the following 7 elements. Orchestrator, Edge AI Applications, RAN L2/L3 Software, RAN L1 Software, Virtualization Platform, NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip, Radio Unit. SoftBank Corp. announced it developed 5G L1 software based on the NVIDIA AI Aerial platform, delivering the high stability and high performance essential for a carrier-grade RAN through parallel signal processing and the optimization of task initiation timing. With this newly developed L1 software, carrier-grade stability has been achieved. In addition to realizing high stability, SoftBank will develop L1 software that can achieve maximized RAN capacity and reduced power consumption. SoftBank constructed the world’s first high-quality 5G vRAN (virtual Radio Access Network) outdoor testing environment, utilizing its newly developed L1 software running on the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip platform. NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchip architecture brings together the accelerated performance of the NVIDIA Hopper architecture with the versatility of the Arm® Neoverse™ V2 - based NVIDIA Grace CPU in a single superchip. SoftBank built the world’s first outdoor testing environment that enables the baseband processing of 20 5G cells with a bandwidth of 100 MHz on a single server featuring the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The 4.9 GHz frequency band was used for this outdoor test and a maximum communication capacity of approximately 1.3 Gbps per cell through a maximum of 4-layer MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) was achieved. The high-speed processing capabilities of NVIDIA’s accelerated computing platform are highly compatible with high-frequency bands that can be allocated to a wide frequency bandwidth per cell, and these capabilities are expected to be applied to future 6G applications such as centimeter waves. Furthermore, since such high-frequency cells are expected to be deployed in high-traffic urban areas, this AI-RAN outdoor test simulates an urban environment, creating a dense configuration with a high-interference area and a mobility area for test drives. For mobile phones, it is necessary to have stability and high connectivity that will minimize the time the cell stops functioning due to failures or malfunctions during long-term operations, as well as network outages due to deterioration of radio wave quality. To achieve these at a high level, it is required to make verifications not only in a controlled radio environment like a laboratory, but also in an irregular radio environment that is situated outdoors. In this test, SoftBank is conducting various trials using more than 100 terminals to confirm the RAN’s stability and high connectivity, which are necessary for a carrier-grade service. Going forward, SoftBank plans to evaluate spatial multiplexing technologies, such as Massive MIMO, and AI for RAN, a technology that enables the enhancement of RAN performance with AI.
