Kyocera Corporation and the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC), Tohoku University have developed a new technology for integrating optical isolators onto silicon photonics chips using 'laser annealing,' a localized, laser-based heat-treatment method. An optical isolator is a component that stabilizes optical communication by allowing optical signals to be transmitted in only one direction, reducing signal reflection. The isolator-integrated photonics chip reduces back-reflected light approximately 95%, enabling faster, energy-efficient AI data centers. A paper summarizing these results was published on Sep. 2, 2026, in 'IEEE Access,' an academic journal issued by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In optical circuits, light reflected back into the laser light source degrades performance. Optical isolators, which suppress reflected light, can overcome this challenge. The next generation of compact, integrated optical circuits incorporating Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) technology will require optical isolators that can be fabricated directly onto silicon photonics chips. Optical isolators typically use a crystalline material known as 'magneto-optical garnet.' To function as an optical isolator, this material requires heat treatment at approximately 600°C or higher. However, heating the entire silicon photonics chip to this temperature can damage electrodes, wiring and other on-chip elements. Finding a way to selectively heat-treat only the magneto-optical garnet without overheating other areas of the chip has remained a significant challenge. To address this challenge, Kyocera and Tohoku University developed a monolithic integration technology that directly fabricates optical isolators onto silicon photonics chips through a 'laser annealing' process, in which a laser beam is applied locally to the areas of the chip requiring heat treatment. Kyocera and Tohoku University demonstrated the device’s operation. Localized laser heating enables heat treatment of magneto-optical garnet without damaging the silicon photonics chip. A near-infrared laser beam is applied only to an optical isolator circuit region measuring approximately 700x700 microns (µm), where the magneto-optical garnet film has been deposited, causing it to crystallize with the properties needed to suppress reflected light. Unlike conventional methods that heat the entire chip in a furnace, this approach virtually eliminates thermal impact on the surrounding optical circuits and electrodes. Using this technology, the research team fabricated a device with a structure that utilizes light interference and experimentally demonstrated its operation as an optical isolator. In the experiment, the team compared the optical output corresponding to signal light, or forward propagation, with that corresponding to back-reflected light, or backward propagation. The results confirmed an isolation ratio of 13.6 dB in the optical communication wavelength range, reducing back-reflected light by approximately 95%. Electron microscopy also confirmed that the magneto-optical garnet in the laser-irradiated area had crystallized well on the silicon waveguide. Kyocera and Tohoku University have previously worked together to develop related optical isolator technologies that can be integrated onto optical circuits. To commercialize these technologies, the two organizations aim to achieve even lower loss, higher efficiency and improved productivity for mass production. They will continue to advance their collaboration and contribute to the development of an efficient and sustainable information society. Journal: IEEE Access. Kyocera Corporation announced that it is commercializing a new multilayer ceramic core substrate for advanced semiconductor packages, such as xPUs and switch ASICs, which are rapidly scaling in complexity as AI data center architectures evolve. The new product will be unveiled at ECTC 2026, an international conference on semiconductor packaging technologies, in Orlando, Florida, USA, May 26-29, 2026. Built from Kyocera’s proprietary Fine Ceramic materials, the new core substrate is engineered for high-density wiring and exceptional rigidity. According to the company, these characteristics dramatically reduce deformation (warpage) in high-performance semiconductor packages, a key challenge as demand for greater device integration and higher processing speed continues to rise. Highly rigid multilayer ceramic core substrate resists deformation (warpage), enhancing performance and reliability in large semiconductor packages. Multilayer ceramic structure allows greater circuit miniaturization through high-density, three-dimensional wiring. Supports custom design requirements, and performance simulations in the design phase. The growth of generative AI and large language models is fueling a global proliferation of AI data centers and creating demand for higher-performance xPU and ASIC semiconductors that require larger, denser package substrates, especially for 2.5D packaging. Core substrates made of organic materials create a bottleneck to higher performance, especially at larger dimensions, due to warpage and wiring-miniaturization challenges. Kyocera is addressing these limitations with a new multilayer ceramic core substrate, leveraging its expertise in laminated ceramic materials to offer higher rigidity and finer wiring in advanced semiconductor packaging. Kyocera’s multilayer ceramic core substrate provides greater rigidity and resistance to deformation (bending) than core substrates made of organic materials, minimizing warpage during each mounting phase. As a result, Kyocera’s multilayer ceramic technology can enable higher device performance using slimmer substrates while facilitating further miniaturization. In multilayer ceramic substrates, conductive paths between layers of ceramic are called vias. Formed while the ceramic is pliable (before firing or sintering), these vias enable finer wiring through superior micro-fabrication as compared to the drilling processes used to create vias in conventional organic core substrates. The smaller via diameters and tighter via pitches made possible in ceramic substrates address the challenges associated with high-density wiring in traditional organic-core substrates. During the design phase, Kyocera provides thermal, electrical, and substrate-warpage simulations based on device performance objectives and specified mounting processes. This simulation data ensures greater customer development efficiency and the achievement of design objectives in the finished device.

Kyocera Corporation announced the development of a pluggable optoelectronic module (OSFP-XD) supporting the PCIe 6.0 standard as a new product in its OPTINITY optoelectronic module series, which contributes to optical communication implementation and power savings in data centers. Kyocera has been developing onboard-type optoelectronic modules that support PCIe 5.0 and convert electrical signals from CPUs, GPUs, and other components into optical signals. With this latest development, by advancing the communication standard to PCIe 6.0, Kyocera has achieved a new level of high-speed, high-capacity communication. Further, the new module’s pluggable configuration enhances design flexibility, system configuration versatility, and ease of implementation. Kyocera will continue developing onboard-type modules as well, aiming to provide optoelectronic interfaces for specific applications and system configurations. This product was developed in collaboration with AuthenX Inc., a company in which Kyocera has invested through Kyocera Venture Innovation Fund I (KVIF-I), the company's corporate venture capital (CVC) fund. The newly developed product will be exhibited at the AuthenX booth at OFC 2026, an international exhibition for the optical communications industry, which will be held in Los Angeles, USA, from March 17 to 19, 2026. In recent years, with the advancement of generative AI and other technologies, the volume of data handled in data centers has been rapidly increasing. Accordingly, PCIe interfaces that connect high-performance computing devices such as GPUs and AI accelerators must support even higher data speeds and capacities. Conventional PCIe connections using electrical wiring face the challenge of increased signal loss and power consumption as transmission distances increase. Additionally, retimers are needed to ensure communication stability, which increase latency and power consumption further. This limits flexibility for equipment placement within racks, making it difficult to optimize cooling efficiency and maintainability. To address these challenges, PCIe connections using optical signals are attracting attention as a technology that enables low-loss, stable transmission even between physically distant devices and resources, while enhancing system design flexibility and contributing to improved efficiency and power savings across entire data centers. To address these challenges, in addition to developing onboard-type optoelectronic modules, Kyocera has newly developed a pluggable module supporting PCIe 6.0. Using the OSFP-XD form factor, Kyocera has achieved high-capacity communication with PCIe 6.0 x16 (64 GT/s per lane). Additionally, optical transmission enables us to eliminate the retimers that are required in electrical wiring, significantly reducing power consumption between PCIe devices. This contributes to power savings across the entire data center, enabling both reduced environmental impact and lower running costs. The pluggable format enhances system design flexibility, enabling integration into existing systems and future expansion. Optical fiber transmission can extend the connection distance between PCIe devices to several hundred meters or more, compared to the conventional electrical wiring limit of under 10 meters. This enables flexible equipment placement within and between racks, with expectations for optimized cooling efficiency and significantly improved maintainability. In addition to onboard-type and OSFP-XD modules, Kyocera plans to develop modules supporting various other form factors for different applications, including Optical CDFP, and will sequentially expand its lineup. This will contribute to large-scale computing well into the future. This achievement will be exhibited at "OFC 2026," one of the world's largest international exhibitions in the optical communications field, to be held in Los Angeles, California, USA, from Tuesday, March 17 to Thursday, March 19, 2026. OFC attracts attention from telecommunications carriers, data center operators, and research institutions worldwide as a platform where the latest advances and products in optical fiber communication technology are showcased. The newly developed OSFP-XD optical transceiver will be exhibited at the AuthenX booth (#5204). AuthenX is a Taiwanese startup company with strengths in the design and development of high-speed optical transceivers utilizing silicon photonics technology. Kyocera has been advancing joint development of optical interconnect technology for next-generation data centers with AuthenX, and made an investment through KVIF-I in December 2025 to accelerate collaboration with the company. This newly developed product was realized by combining AuthenX's module design technology with Kyocera's PCIe protocol processing, signal quality management, and link training technologies cultivated over many years. Both companies will continue to work closely together and accelerate efforts toward commercialization and market launch of this technology.

Kyocera Corporation announced that it has developed a new meta-lens that uses metasurface-based optical control technology to precisely manipulate focal positions depending on the wavelength of light. Applying this technology, Kyocera has created a prototype Wearable Aerial Display that achieves both a highly compact optical system and the ability to reproduce images with natural depth perception. The device will make its world premiere at CES 2026, January 6-9, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Key Features of Kyocera's Meta-Lens: A meta-lens is an ultra-thin optical component incorporating a metasurface -- a dense arrangement of pillar-shaped meta-atoms smaller than the wavelength of light -- to control light propagation. This structure allows Kyocera to manufacture a meta-lens less than 1mm thick, compared with conventional optical lenses that typically require more than 1cm of thickness. Additionally, by precisely designing the meta-atoms, multiple optical functions -- such as wavelength control and phase modulation -- can be integrated into a single meta-lens. This significantly reduces the number of optical components traditionally required. As a result, both the optical system and the final device can be made dramatically smaller and lighter. Enables Image Displays with Natural Depth Perception: Using its proprietary meta-atom design technology, Kyocera developed a meta-lens featuring a focal position that shifts depending on the color (wavelength) of light. Using this lens, images of different colors can be formed at different heights -- for example, green images appear farther from the viewer, while red images appear closer. By generating images at varying depths, the system produces three-dimensional aerial visuals with rich depth cues, even within a wearable-sized optical module. This innovation provides natural depth expression without the need for bulky multi-layer optical assemblies. By combining the newly developed meta-lens with Kyocera's existing aerial imaging technologies -- cultivated through its research into high-resolution aerial displays -- the company succeeded in creating a compact, lightweight wearable display capable of projecting floating images with realistic depth. This marks a major step toward next-generation visual interfaces that integrate high-quality optics into small, body-worn devices. Future Potential: Currently, Kyocera's technology enables aerial images whose focal positions vary by color. In the future, increasing the degree of wavelength control could allow full-color, high-resolution aerial images, and advances in meta-atom design may enable the projection of smooth 3D visuals into mid-air. The thin and lightweight nature of meta-lenses makes them highly suitable for applications such as: More miniaturized and wearable VR/AR glasses; Slimmer, space-saving designs for cameras and projectors; Other optical devices where compactness is essential. Kyocera will continue enhancing its proprietary meta-lens technologies to contribute to the advancement of optical solutions across consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and a wide range of emerging fields.

Kyocera Corporation has developed a Triple Lens AI-Based High-Resolution Depth Sensor for close imaging. The camera utilizes three lenses and proprietary AI to recognize semi-transparent, thin, and fine line-shaped objects that were previously difficult to detect with the human eye and traditional stereo cameras. The new Triple Lens AI-Based Depth Sensor accurately measures the distance to and size of such objects with more precision than ever before, tripling its precision measurement of tiny objects often difficult to detect with the human eye, from 1 mm to 0.3 mm. The triple lens is expected to help with inspection processes in manufacturing, improve precision in surgical robotics, and enable easier harvesting with agricultural robots. Main FeaturesThe triple lens configuration enables precise measurements, including distance and size, of thin, linear objects positioned parallel to the direction between the left and right lenses. This capability allows the measurement of ultra-fine wires and different objects, such as: Thin, irregularly shaped linear objects, such as harnesses or ultra-fine wires Reflective objects like metal Translucent objects like plastic Development BackgroundLabor shortages can be a challenge in many countries, particularly developed nations, driving the need for further productivity improvements to compensate. As one solution, advanced vision sensing technology capable of object recognition as a substitute for the human eye is gaining attention. In 2024, Kyocera developed a Dual Lens AI-Based High-Resolution Depth Sensor for Close Imaging capable of high-precision distance measurement with 100µm resolution at a 10cm range, allowing distance measurement of tiny objects around 1mm in size, even from reflective or semi-transparent objects, which was difficult for conventional stereo cameras. However, distance measurement with a dual lens sensor can be challenging for objects with limited surface features or in environments where part of the object is obscured, preventing full recognition. Kyocera’s new Triple Lens AI-Based Depth Sensor was created to solve these challenges. FeaturesKyocera’s new Triple Lens AI-Based Depth Sensor acquires three sets of parallax information—“left-center,” “center-right,” and “left-right”—from a close distance of 10 cm through the combination of three lenses and proprietary AI. Combining multiple parallax data sets virtually eliminates mismatches and reduces blind spots, significantly improving measurement reliability. It also enables accurate distance measurement for objects that were difficult to measure with a single lens, specifically those with repetitive patterns, partially reflective metals, translucent plastics, and other surfaces lacking distinct features. Kyocera’s new AI-Based Depth Sensor can accurately measure distances to thin, irregularly shaped linear objects (e.g., harnesses) and ultra-fine wires with diameters as small as 0.3mm. Future DevelopmentsThe improved accuracy of Kyocera’s Triple Lens AI-Based Depth Sensor lends itself to a diverse range of industrial fields, such as: 1. Inspection Processes with High Repetition of PatternsIn inspection processes involving objects with highly repetitive patterns, such as electronic circuit boards or textiles, dual lens stereo cameras are prone to mismatching. The triple lens configuration, however, significantly increases measurement accuracy and reliability by utilizing multiple parallax combinations. This enables precise analysis of depth and surface shape, ensuring accurate measurements and minimizing mismatches. 2. Surgical RobotsThin, highly reflective surgical tools, such as needles and sutures, are often hard to distinguish against their background and can be partially hidden from view. The triple lens configuration, three cameras at different angles, enables precise position recognition by combining information from multiple viewpoints, increasing accuracy and reliability in identifying these instruments. 3. Agricultural RobotsIn crop harvesting and other complex environments where fruits and leaves occlude each other, the triple lens camera enables more accurate recognition and precise position measurement with minimal blind spots. Kyocera will continue to develop technological innovations that create societal value and improve the lives of people around the world.
